Abstract
During the last few decades there has been growing recognition and concern about the effects of the economy on the natural environment. There has also been a significant increase in the integration of the international economy. As the international trade regime has grown in complexity and visibility via the evolution of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) into the World Trade Organization (WTO) and a wave of bilateral and regional free trade agreements, the interaction between globalization and the environment has become an important issue on the policy agenda.
